Bar chart comparing house edge on Las Vegas roulette tables: single zero, double zero, triple zero and the top line bet

How to play roulette in Vegas is the same as anywhere else at heart, you buy wheel chips at the table, bet on the layout and wait for the ball, but the details of a Nevada casino floor matter: most tables use a double zero wheel with a 5.26% edge, single zero wheels exist in smaller numbers and usually ask a higher minimum, and limits shift with the day and the hour. Knowing those few things before you sit down cuts the cost of every spin.

How to play roulette in Vegas, step by step

  1. Look at the wheel, not just the sign. Count the green pockets. One green pocket means single zero; 0 and 00 means double zero; three greens means triple zero.
  2. Read the placard. The sign gives the smallest and largest stakes allowed. Inside chips usually add up toward the minimum, but an outside chip stack has to clear it solo.
  3. Buy in between spins. Lay your cash flat on the felt. Dealers never accept it straight from your fingers. Ask for roulette chips and choose a value per chip.
  4. Bet and watch the call. Place chips until the dealer waves off betting. Late chips go back.
  5. Wait for the dolly. The dealer marks the number, clears losers and pays winners. Hands off until the marker lifts.
  6. Color up before you leave. Slide the colored stack back and swap it for chips the cashier accepts. Wheel chips are worthless at the cage.

Single zero vs double zero roulette in Las Vegas

Most of the floor is double zero. Single zero tables can be found, but there are fewer of them, and they usually sit at higher minimums or in high limit areas. Some casinos also run triple zero wheels, which pay the same as the others while adding a third green pocket.

WheelEdgeAverage loss on 100 spins of 10 unitsHow common
Single zero2.70%about 27 unitsFewer tables, higher minimums
Double zero5.26%about 53 unitsThe standard on most floors
Triple zero7.69%about 77 unitsFound in some casinos
If a single zero table's minimum fits your bankroll, it halves the average cost of play compared with double zero. If it does not, a smaller bet at a double zero table can still cost less per hour than an oversized bet at a single zero one.

Details of each game are on American roulette, European roulette and triple zero roulette.

Vegas roulette minimum and maximum bets

Minimums are not fixed. They climb on busy weekend nights and around big events, and drop on quiet weekday mornings. The same table can change its sign during the day. High limit rooms raise both ends of the range. Electronic roulette terminals, where you bet on a screen tied to a real or virtual wheel, usually allow the smallest bets on the floor.

Maximums cap each bet, and single numbers get the tightest cap. That cap is what stops doubling systems; see table limits for how the inside and outside rules work, with examples in units.

Reading a Las Vegas roulette table

A double zero layout has 0 and 00 at the head of the grid. That adds one bet missing from 37 pocket games: the top line, a chip on the corner of 0 and 1 covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Its 6 to 1 price falls further below fair than any other bet here, so it carries 7.89%, more than anything else on that felt. All remaining bets at that 00 table carry 5.26%.

Table manners at a Nevada roulette game

  • Put cash on the felt and let the dealer pick it up. Dealers do not take money hand to hand.
  • Buy in, bet and color up only between spins, never while the ball is rolling or the dolly is down.
  • If you cannot reach a number, set chips in front of the dealer and say the bet before betting closes.
  • Tipping the dealer is customary. Many players do it by placing a small bet for the dealer, which the dealer keeps if it wins.
  • Ask questions during the quiet moment after payouts. Dealers help beginners all the time.

Who regulates roulette in Nevada

The Nevada Gaming Control Board regulates casinos in the state, including how table games are run and how electronic games are tested. Casinos check, level and rotate physical wheels, as heavy long use, or a bowl that is not perfectly level, could nudge results toward certain pockets, and electronic roulette must use approved, tested equipment. Concerns about fairness are covered on is roulette rigged.
