Roulette Strategy for Small Bankroll Players: 100 Units and 20 Units, Simulated

With little to play with, bet size decides how long you last, not whether you win.

Bar chart of average spins a 100 unit roulette bankroll lasts at bets of 1, 5, 10 and 25 units on red

The best roulette strategy for small bankroll play is to choose your bet size for the length of session you want, because a small stake cannot change the house edge but it can decide whether you get two hundred spins or twenty. Every row below is the average of 100,000 computer played sessions on a one zero wheel, betting red. The numbers show exactly how a 100 unit stake and a 20 unit stake behave as the bet grows.

Search terms often name a money amount, like a hundred or twenty. This page uses units instead, so the math works whatever a unit is worth to you.

At the table

  • Golden rule

Smaller bets mean more spins. They do not mean better odds.
  • 100 units, 5 unit bets

25.9% of sessions went broke within 200 spins.
  • 100 units, 1 unit bets

None went broke in 200 spins; average result minus 5.4 units.
  • 20 units, 1 unit on red

    92.3% survived 100 spins; 35.6% finished ahead.
  • One all in bet on red

Doubles the stake 48.65% of the time on a single zero wheel.
  • Edge never moves

2.70% single zero, 5.26% double zero, whatever the stake.

Roulette strategy for small bankroll play: bet size buys time

A bankroll is a clock, and your bet size sets how fast it ticks. Every spin costs the edge times your bet on average: 0.027 units for a 1 unit bet on a European wheel, 0.135 units for a 5 unit bet. On top of that average sits the swing, and the swing grows with the bet too. Big bets reach the bottom of a small stack quickly.

The first chart tracks the average number of spins a 100 unit stake lasted, with a cap of 200 spins per session. At 1 unit, nobody ran out. At 25 units, the typical session was over in about 63 spins.

Simulation setup: European wheel, 1 bet on red per spin, flat bet size, session ends at 200 spins (100 for the 20 unit tests) or when the stake can no longer cover the bet. 100,000 sessions per row. Results are approximate and will vary slightly on another run.

Best roulette strategy with a 100 unit bankroll

A roulette bankroll strategy starts with numbers like these. Here is what happened to 100 units over a 200 spin evening at four flat bet sizes. "Ahead" means more than 100 units at the end. "Broke" means the stake could no longer cover the next bet.

Flat bet on redEnded aheadWent brokeAverage spinsAverage result
1 unit32.6%0.0%200minus 5.4
5 units32.5%25.9%181minus 24.4
10 units27.4%61.0%129minus 34.6
25 units13.5%85.4%63minus 42.3

Two things jump out. First, the share of winners barely changes between 1 and 5 unit bets, but the broke rate goes from zero to one in four. Second, the average loss grows with bet size because more chips go through the wheel. At 1 unit you only wager about 200 units all night, so the edge takes about 5.4.

Add the second green pocket and things sour. With 5 unit bets, 38.0% of sessions went broke and only 20.6% finished ahead, with an average result of minus 45.2 units. For a stake this size, a 1 or 2 unit bet on an even money box is the calm choice.

Doubling a small stake: one bold bet or many small ones

Some players have a different goal: turn 100 units into 200 or lose trying. For that goal the math flips. Fewer, bigger bets give the edge fewer chances to bite.

Bet size (100 unit start)Chance to reach 200Average spins until done
1 unit0.45%about 3,667
5 units25.33%about 365
10 units36.80%about 98
25 units44.61%about 16
50 units47.30%about 4
100 units, one spin48.65%1

These figures come from the exact gambler's ruin formula, and the simulation matched them within a few tenths of a point. So the strategy for doubling is a single bet, and the strategy for a long, relaxed night is many tiny ones. You cannot have both from the same stake. Pick the goal first, then the bet.

Best roulette strategy with 20 units

Twenty units is a short stack, so the choices narrow and roulette bankroll management tips start to matter. I tested several ways to spend it over up to 100 spins.

How the 20 units were playedEnded aheadWent brokeAverage spins
1 unit on red35.6%7.7%98
1 unit on a dozen40.5%19.3%93
2 units on red34.2%41.0%81
5 units on red20.6%76.1%44
1 unit on number 1724.5%75.5%48
20 units on red each spin5.4%94.4%13

The single number row is all or nothing: you need a hit inside the first 20 spins or the stake is gone, and a single hit only buys you time. Three quarters of those sessions bust. The dozen row finished ahead more often than red at 1 unit because each hit pays 2 to 1, but it also busts more often, since it loses 25 spins in 37.

For most people holding 20 units, single unit bets on red or black are how you see a whole session. On the American wheel that plan finished ahead only 26.5% of the time, with 12.1% going broke.

What 100 units on green pays, and other big single bets

A lot of small bankroll searches are really about one dream bet. Here is what those shots return. Zero is paid exactly like 17 or 32 when it is backed alone.

The betProfit if it hitsTotal handed backChance (one zero / two zeros)
100 units on 03,5003,6002.70% / 2.63%
1,000 units on 035,00036,0002.70% / 2.63%

100 units split on 0 and 001,7001,800not offered / 5.26%

A bet like this misses about 36 times out of 37. If you put your whole stake on green, you are choosing a very short night with a very small chance of a big one. The green pockets page covers the zeros in more depth, and the payout calculator works out any stake.

Roulette money management and bankroll strategy for small stakes

  1. Split the stake by session. If you plan three visits, divide your total by three and keep the rest out of reach.
  2. Make each bet 1 to 2% of the session stake. That is 1 or 2 units from 100. With 20 units, the smallest chip is already 5%, so stay there.
  3. Choose single zero when you can. At 5 unit bets it cut the broke rate from 38.0% to 25.9% in my runs.
  4. Stay on outside boxes for long sessions. They swing less, so the stake lasts.
  5. Do not raise bets to catch up. Progressions like Martingale need far deeper pockets than a small bankroll has.
  6. Set a stop loss, a win goal and a time. All three, written down.

Table minimums matter too. In Las Vegas they move with the day and hour, and they are highest on busy weekend nights. If the minimum is more than about 5% of your stake, wait for a quieter time or practice on the free simulator instead.

Only bring what you are happy to spend on entertainment, and stop when the session limit is hit. If you are betting to win back losses, take a break and look at the NCPG website or gamblingtherapy.org for free support.

Test your small bankroll plan on the flat bet tester

The tester above runs your own version of these experiments in seconds, with play units and nothing stored.

  1. Leave the system on Flat and pick the European wheel.
  2. Type 100 as the starting stake and 5 as the base, any table maximum above 5, and 200 spins per session.
  3. Set 1,000 sessions and run it.
  4. Look at two outputs: how many sessions busted and the mean finish. With 1,000 sessions you should land within a few points of the 25.9% broke and 32.5% ahead found above.
  5. Change the base bet to 1, then 10, and watch the broke share move while the share ahead barely does.

Then switch the bankroll to 20 and the base bet to 1 to see the short stack version. If you want to compare a progression, the betting systems guide explains each one, and the strategy chart puts them side by side.

Questions players ask

Which roulette strategy suits 100 units best?

For a long session, place 1 or 2 units on red or black at a table with one zero. In 100,000 simulated 200 spin sessions, 1 unit bets never ran dry and gave up roughly 5.4 units per session. If your only goal is to double the stake, one 100 unit bet on red does that 48.65% of the time.

What is a good roulette strategy with 20 units?

Bet 1 unit on red, black or another even money box. In the simulation, 92.3% of those sessions lasted the full 100 spins and 35.6% ended ahead. Bigger bets ended most sessions early.

What does 100 units on green pay?

Backing 0 alone earns thirty five times the stake, so 100 units comes back as 3,600: a 3,500 profit plus the original chips. Expect that once per 37 spins with one green pocket, once per 38 with two.

What is roulette money management?

It is deciding how much to bring, how much to bet per spin and when to stop, before play starts. It cannot beat the house edge, but it controls how long a stake lasts and caps how much a bad night can cost.

How do you win roulette with small money?

No plan wins over time, small stake or large. What a small stake can do is last longer with small even money bets, or take one bold swing if doubling is the only goal. Choose one and accept the trade off.

Does a bigger bankroll improve the odds?

No. Spin odds are fixed, and the casino's slice is fixed with them: 2.70% or 5.26%. A bigger bankroll only lets you survive longer swings at the same bet size.
