Roulette numbers go 1 through 36 on every standard wheel, plus green zeros: one (0) on single zero wheels, European and French alike, for 37 pockets, two (0 plus 00) at an American table for 38, and three on a triple zero wheel for 39. Eighteen of 1 through 36 wear red and eighteen wear black, 36 is the top number every time, and the order around the wheel is deliberately shuffled so that colors, highs and lows, odds and evens are spread as evenly as possible.

How many numbers are on a roulette wheel?
| Wheel type | Numbered 1 to 36 | Green pockets | Pockets in total | Your chance per number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| European or French | 36 | 0 | 37 | 2.70% |
| American | 36 | 0, 00 | 38 | 2.63% |
| Triple zero | 36 | 0, 00, 000 | 39 | 2.56% |
The table layout carries the same count: 37 betting squares on a single zero table, 38 on an American one, 39 with triple zero. When someone asks how many numbers in roulette, or how many are on the table, the honest answer is 36 numbers plus the zeros. Count the zeros as numbers and you get 37, 38 or 39.
Roulette numbers and colors
| Block of the layout | Red numbers | Reds here | Black numbers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening block of ten | 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 | 5 of 10 | 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 |
| Second block, eight numbers | 12, 14, 16, 18 | 4 of 8 | 11, 13, 15, 17 |
| Third block, ten numbers | 19, 21, 23, 25, 27 | 5 of 10 | 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 |
| Final block, eight numbers | 30, 32, 34, 36 | 4 of 8 | 29, 31, 33, 35 |
| Totals | 18 reds | half | 18 blacks, with the zeros green |
An easy way to remember the reds on the layout: in the stretch 1 to 10 the odd squares are red, and the same goes for 19 to 28. In the stretches 11 to 18 and 29 to 36 the pattern flips and the even squares are red. So 17 is black, 18 is red, 19 is red and 20 is black.

Roulette wheel numbers in order
Read clockwise starting at zero. The bars only split the list into groups of four so it is easier to follow with a finger.
European and French wheel, in groups of four: 0 | 32, 15, 19, 4 | 21, 2, 25, 17 | 34, 6, 27, 13 | 36, 11, 30, 8 | 23, 10, 5, 24 | 16, 33, 1, 20 | 14, 31, 9, 22 | 18, 29, 7, 28 | 12, 35, 3, 26 | then zero again.
American wheel, same grouping: 0 | 28, 9, 26, 30 | 11, 7, 20, 32 | 17, 5, 22, 34 | 15, 3, 24, 36 | 13, 1, 00, 27 | 10, 25, 29, 12 | 8, 19, 31, 18 | 6, 21, 33, 16 | 4, 23, 35, 14 | 2, then zero again.
On both wheels the colors go red, black, red, black around the rim, with green breaking the run. On the American wheel 00 sits straight across from 0, and most consecutive pairs face each other: 1 is opposite 2, 3 opposite 4, and so on. You can watch either order spin on the roulette wheel spinner.
Why roulette numbers look scrambled
If the numbers ran 1, 2, 3 around the rim, all the low numbers would sit in one half of the wheel, and a wheel with even a slight tilt would favor low bets. Mixing the order spreads every outside group around the whole rim. On the European wheel, for example, the first dozen is scattered across the circle, as the diagram above shows, and no two neighbors share a color.
The arrangement also matters for call bets, which cover a stretch of neighbors on the wheel rather than a block on the felt. The call bets page maps them.
Are there lucky roulette numbers?
No. On a fair wheel no pocket is favored: each one gets 1 chance in 37 (or 38) every time the ball is launched, whatever came before. A list of lucky numbers for today is a guess dressed up as advice. Hot and cold boards only show the past, and the wheel does not read them.
Roulette patterns and betting on number groups
| Group | Size | Hits per 37 spins, on average | Pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| One color | 18 | 18 in 37 | 1 to 1 |
| A dozen | 12 | 12 in 37 | 2 to 1 |
| A double street | 6 | 6 in 37 | 5 to 1 |
| Zero by itself | 1 | 1 in 37 | 35 to 1 |
Betting patterns that pick groups by color or recent results do not change these chances. The roulette bets guide covers every group you can bet on, and the free simulator lets you try them with credits.
Questions players ask
What color is 17 in roulette?
Black. In the 11 to 18 block the colors flip compared with 1 to 10, so the odd ones there, 17 included, are black.
What number does roulette go up to?
Thirty six. Every standard wheel uses 1 to 36 plus one or more green zeros.
How many numbers does a roulette table have?
Thirty six numbered squares, plus one green box at a European table or two at an American one: 37 or 38 in all.
Is 0 an even number in roulette?
Not for betting purposes. Zero is green and sits outside both the odd group and the even group, so a chip on even loses to it.
How many red numbers are on a roulette wheel?
Eighteen, the same as black. The green zeros are the only pockets that are neither.
Are some roulette numbers lucky?
No. Every launch of the ball gives each number identical odds, and the history board has no say in it.
